Natural Wax ...Say What?

Have you seen my posts and been wondering "what does she mean by "natural waxes"???"  Well check out this comparison picture below!  

Now tell me why you want to burn/melt this in your home? 

I am hoping that it was of those cases of "once you know better, you do better", which I TOTALLY understand.  I didn't know that all the "other companies" were out there pitching their products as "non-toxic"  just because they barely qualify to do so.  This is why you need to always do your research people!!


I did some research of my own...not a tonne, cause it didn't take me long to realize I was going to burn/melt these paraffin wax based products in my home...but here is was I found, just of Wikipedia.

WARNING - TOXIC MATERIALS AHEAD!!

The simplest paraffin molecule is that of methane,. Heavier members of the series, such as octane, C8H18, and mineral oil appear as liquids at room temperature. The solid forms of paraffin, called paraffin wax, are from the heaviest molecules from C20H42 to C40H82

Paraffin, or paraffin hydrocarbon, is also the technical name for an alkane in general, but in most cases it refers specifically to a linear, or normal alkane — whereas branched, or isoalkanes are also called isoparaffins. It is distinct from the fuel known in the United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa as paraffin oil or just paraffin, which is called kerosene in most of the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

So for the most part - it's toxic poisons.  When you look up safety & hazerdous guidlines, most of these are highly toxic and FLAMMABLE!  


Don't panic...if you're reading this, obviously everything has worked out for the better and you're not dead due to burning down your home, or inhaling to many of these toxins.  


Also don't worry that you won't be able to have those wonderful smelling, and beautiful candle lit ambiances in your home anymore because there is an alternative!

The Sun & Your Skin

There has been some discussion, and there is also some controversy about very high SPF numbers and just how much more protection they provide. As you will learn below from the percentages of protection of the different SPF numbers, the difference in UV ray protection in SPF numbers becomes minimal as the number increases past about 30 or 40. The difference of protection between SPF 15 and SPF 30 is great (5%), but the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 40 is minimal (0.5%).
Besides protecting you from sunburn, sunscreens help to prevent other skin damage related to sun exposure, such as premature aging and pre-cancerous growths.
Using sunscreen is an effective way to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays. However, since sunscreen cannot block all UV rays and many people do not apply it correctly, you should always practice additional sun safe behaviors such as wearing protective clothing and seeking shade when possible.
SPF... What’s it All About?
SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor.”
Always wear a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher!
SPF was developed to describe the amount of protection that a sunscreen provides. No sunscreen can protect your skin from all of the UV rays, but a higher SPF number indicates protection from more rays.
The SPF number tells you how much longer you can stay outside without burning while wearing the sunscreen product as opposed to not wearing any sun protection product. SPF measures “time to burn.”
SPF Math
SPF Number x Time to Burn Without Sun Protection = Time to Burn while wearing sunscreen*
     *assuming that sunscreen is applied properly
Example: If your skin would burn in 10 minutes in the afternoon sun without any sun protection, and you applied a sunscreen with an SPF 15, you would have 15 x 10 = 150 minutes (2.5 hours) before you would burn.
Percentage of Protection from damaging UV rays:
SPF 15 = 92%
SPF 30 = 97%
SPF 40 = 97.5%
Sunscreen Basic Info
Always choose and use a sunscreen that is:
·         An SPF 15 or higher
·         Broad-spectrum (protects from both UVA and UVB rays)
·         Waterproof or Sweatproof
Application tips
·         Apply the sunscreen generously to all exposed skin – most people do not use enough sunscreen and therefore do not get the maximum protection.
·         Reapply every two hours, and even more frequently if you are sweating, getting wet, or are in a windy climate.
·         Apply 30 minutes before going outside.
The “DL” of Sunscreen:
·         Sunscreen is a lotion formulated with unique chemical components to absorb UV light.
·         When sunscreen is applied to the skin, the chemical molecules form an invisible, protective layer on the skin that protects from penetrating UV rays.
·         All sunscreens protect from UVB rays, but only “Broad-Spectrum” sunscreens protect from both UVB and UVA rays.
o    UVB rays affect the top layers of the skin and are responsible for Burning.
o    UVA rays affect the lower layers of the skin and are responsible for Aging.
·         Remember to always buy a sunscreen that is broad-spectrum!
The Confusing Part About Sunscreen
Many people think that SPF values can be added. Actually, SPF values cannot be added – if you apply a sunscreen of 8 and then one of 12, you will not have the protection of an SPF 20. You will only be getting the protection of an SPF 12.
Reapplication only helps to ensure that you have the amount of protection and time before you burn that you calculated when you first applied sunscreen that day. Since no sunscreens can protect your skin from all UV rays, some rays will get through.
After your calculated “time to burn” has expired, your skin has absorbed all the UV rays that it can handle before it will start to burn. Even if you reapply sunscreen at this point, you will still burn because some rays will get through to your skin and your skin has already been saturated with UV. Therefore, you need to get out of the sun at this point and let your skin rest before exposing it to more rays.
Reapplication only ensures that you have your original time outside – sunscreen can wear off because of sweat, wind, and other factors you need to reapply in order to be protected.
So what’s the lesson to be learned about sunscreen? If you know that you will be in the sun for a long period of time, start with a higher-SPF sunscreen in order to have protection for the entire time that you are exposed.
Sunscreen vs. Sunblock
·         Sunscreen contains chemicals that absorb UV rays before they damage the skin and sunblocks contain particles that physically block UV rays from reaching the skin.
·         Sunscreen needs to be applied about 30 minutes before sun exposure so that the chemicals have time to soak into your skin and form a layer of protection.
·         Sunblock does not need to be applied before going into the sun – it will begin to work as soon as you rub it on because it sits on top of the skin.
Environmental Factors Related to Sunscreen Performance
Certain conditions can actually increase the intensity of UV rays and put you at greater risk for skin damage. These conditions may also decrease the time that sunscreens keep you safe in the sun:
·         Higher altitudes
·         Low latitudes
·         Clear, sunny days
·         Mid-day sunshine (10am-3pm)
When any of these factors are present, you should be sure to wear a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher and re-apply your sunscreen every 2 hours – or better yet, minimize UV exposure by wearing cover-up clothing, a hat, sunglasses or goggles, and seeking shade when possible.
Sunscreen Use
·         Always make sure that your sunscreen is SPF 15 or higher, “broad-spectrum,” and waterproof or sweatproof.
·         A generous amount of sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin (do not forget your ears and the back of your neck.) In the summer, it is recommended to use one ounce of sunscreen – the amount to fill a shot glass – to cover your exposed skin.
·         Allow at least 30 minutes for your sunscreen to absorb before you head into the sun so that the chemicals can form a protective shield.
·         Be sure to reapply another layer of sunscreen if you will be in the sun for more than 2 hours throughout the day under intense UV conditions, and especially when it’s windy or you’re sweating.
Incorporating Sunscreen Into Your Daily Routine
You can make sunscreen application easy to remember by making it a part of your day-to-day routine, like brushing your teeth. Keep a bottle of sunscreen with your other toiletries and apply it every day.
Women are lucky since many lotions and make-up products now include sun protection with an SPF of 15. Seek out these products and you can easily protect your skin from damaging UV rays.
Types of Sunscreen
Some people complain that certain types of sunscreens make them break-out, are too oily, or cause allergies. Improvements in sunscreen over the years have eliminated many of these problems. If you have sensitive skin, look for sunscreens that are:
·         PABA-free (PABA is a chemical that some people are allergic to – most sunscreens are now PABA-free.)
·         Noncomedogenic or oil-free sunscreens (will not clog pores.)
·         Sprays, lotions, gels, etc. – sunscreen comes in many different forms to suit various preferences

Paraffin Candles Are Destroying Your Home & Health!

Most of us who burn candles assume that they are safe – aside from the obvious danger that you can burn your home down if left unattended.  Please be sure that when burning candles that you follow all safety procedures to keep you, your family, and your home safe from being destroyed.

Personally we burn candles in our home for two reasons.  One being that we like to be able to set the mood with a certain scent, and make our home smell wonderful.  The other reason is because we have smokers in our home (I know, I know we focus on healthy living, yet we have smokers in our home?! Trust me, we’re working on getting this home to be a smoke free home too!)

Now here is where you need to pay attention!

Did you know that most candles are made from the sludge in the bottom of a barrel of oil which is bleached and texturized with a chemical called acrolein?

They're called paraffin candles and burning one puts all the same horrible toxins and carcinogens (cancer causing agents) into the air in your home that burning diesel fuel in your home would.

The National Candle Association estimates that more than 7 million people in the US alone burn candles every year.

But testing by the EPA has confirmed that those candles, and the smoke and soot they give off, contain several dangerous chemicals in significant quantities. These chemicals include known or probable carcinogens, neurotoxins and reproductive toxins.

The American Lung Association also warns that burning paraffin candles can emit toxins (in measurable amounts) into your home's air.

It might shock you to learn that after burning just a few paraffin candles in your home, the overall effect on the quality of the air in your home could be worse than the air in major cities like Los Angeles! (Can you say DISGUSTING!?)

Not only is your health affected, but the health of your pets and children as well.

Cathy Flanders who has been at the forefront of addressing health and safety issues involving candles says, "With the current 'candle-craze' and increased candle burning in homes, expectant Moms need to be aware of the fact that the emissions from some candles are toxic, reproductive toxins, neuro-toxins and/or carcinogens. This has been a growing cause for concern for the EPA and children's health agencies."

And it might hit your pocket book soon too. Not only is the price of oil spiralling out of control, but you might have a nasty surprise the next time you go to renew your homeowners insurance.

The NIA Group (Insurance and Financial Services) lists the following problems with paraffin candles in an article on their website:

1) Reduces the internal air quality in your home.

2) Damage by particulate deposits on interior and exterior walls, carpets, furniture, appliances, window treatments, floors and other surfaces.

3) Contributes to health problems from inhaling particulate matter or ingesting harmful chemicals.

4) Spews hazardous chemicals that are either in the paraffin wax, the wick, or are present when paraffin wax is burned....Acetone, Benzene, Trichlorofluoromethane, Carbon Disulfide, 2-Butanone, Trichloroethane, Trichloroethene, Carbon Tetrachloride, Tetrachloroethene, Toluene, Chlorobenzene, Ethylbenzene, Styrene, Xylene, Phenol, Cresol, Cyclopentene and Lead

They go on to say...

"Another surprise is that the candle-making industry is not required to tell consumers about the ingredients used in their products, including when a wick is used which contains a lead core."

No one knows for sure if paraffin candles cause cancer, but there are at least 4 cancer-causing chemicals associated with paraffin candles.

The EPA lists these chemicals on their website:

1) Benzene (EPA classification as Group A, known human carcinogen).

2) Carbon Tetrachloride (EPA classification as Group B2 probable human carcinogen).

3) Trichloroethane (EPA classification as Group C, possible human carcinogen).

4) Toluene (EPA classification as Group B2 probable human carcinogen).

Would you burn animal fat in your home?

4 Keys to Exceptional Health

The key to radiant health is not understanding the molecular structure of the human body, but understanding some basic principles that can guide you onto a path that allows you to make better decisions about your choices for; food, water, air, and environment.

It has become increasingly difficult to wade through mountains of claims and decipher what is the “real deal”, and what is some fake money making scam.  So before you go to the product shelves, you need to first understand the 4 key things that are required for exceptional health.


1.    Nutritional Requirements

The North American population is severely deficient in the nutrients required for good health. There are a variety of reasons, but it mainly stems from the fact that most people only eat 20 different types of foods (20 people! That is so very little when you look at the big spectrum of food out there!), and they all deliver little in the way of nutrition. If they chose to eat 20 “superfoods” it would be a radically different story. This situation is exacerbated by toxins (which you heard about in our previous blog “Daily Toxin Intake - Ewww! in our food and water which strips the few precious minerals out of our body as well creating absorption challenges.

**Please Note** Even though our physiological make-up is generally the same, what condition it is in currently is a totally different subject. For this reason, I suggest  talking to a physician who can help you assess your particular situation with various tests and questionnaires.

One thing for sure is that you want to progressively start doing the following:

1)    Choose organic whenever possible to avoid toxic substances like pesticides and herbicides. If you are on a budget, check out this video that will help you choose organic for the “dirtiest” produce.  Also, it’s a good idea to choose organic starting with the top of the food chain, such as chicken and beef.

2)    Choose a quality water filter for your home, and if you can get one that infuses natural minerals into the water, that will make a tremendous difference
over cheap filters, or worst case, tap water.


3)    Start to incorporate different foods into your diet and replace other foods with them to boost your nutrition exponentially. Choose sweet potatoes over regular potatoes, quinoa instead of white rice, spelt flour in lieu of white flour, and almond or rice milk over cow’s milk, for a few examples ;)

4)    Choose “superfoods” daily that will quickly increase your uptake of nutrients in whole form, supplements, or powders. A properly made smoothie with a “superfoods” powder can deliver more nutrition in a single serving than what some people get all week.

5)    Start juicing. A small orange, kiwi, and grapefruit will make a glass of juice rich in phytonutrients, and knock off 3 servings of fruit in one shot.

6)    Steam or lightly cook your vegetables. Do not boil them to death, or worse microwave them to the grave (sure it might be faster, but it’s also a faster way to lessen your health). This destroys the nutrition there was initially in the food.

7)    Eat your fruit and vegetables as raw as possible.

Do not feel you need to do all these at once. Start with one, and work through each of them in due time. This is the key to staying on the right path.


2.    Detoxification is Essential

The physical signs of ageing are invariably linked to the amount of toxins built up in your system. The aches and pains, illnesses, disease, and deaths can all be tied back to an unhealthy level of toxicity in that person’s body. This is why detoxification, and proper nutrition with it, is essential to true health.

There are several ways to detoxify:

1)    Consume foods that are naturally detoxifying on a daily basis. Dark green leafy vegetables, lemon, garlic, and cayenne are great places to start.

3)    Drink at least half your body weight in purified, preferably alkaline and mineral rich, water. (I know this seems like your drinking an oceans worth of water, but you can start gradually – especially those who don’t drink water much to  begin with)

4)    Do a cleanse or a fast.

3.    Stop the Stress

I know, I know…this one is easier said than done, but stress is extremely acidic to your body and causes all types of health issues. It’s often sneakier than the rest as we deal with it every day and don’t notice it until it’s too late. Make no mistake about it though; reducing stress is a key to your health.

Some of the best ways to reduce stress include spending time doing more things you love and less time doing things you dislike. This could mean more time with family and friends, or doing more recreational activities and exercise. It can also mean a different career path and simplifying your life.

Whatever it is that stresses you out, take steps to start reducing it or eliminate it altogether, before it’s too late.

4.    Eliminate Your EMF Exposure

They are often emitted by everyday things we are around like; appliances, computers, cell phones, power lines, and other communication equipment.
